Closet Confessions

Part of my messy closet.

Part of my messy closet.

What’s the rule about things in your wardrobe?  I think it’s something about rotating clothes out if you haven’t worn them in over a year.  If I did that,  my closet would be more than half empty.  I always worry about giving a particular item away and then missing it soon after – even though that’s never happened.

My closet is a mess.  There are shoes I’ve never worn and jackets from the 80′s (don’t tell anyone) with a thick layer of dust on them.  I try to keep jeans and sweaters in neat piles but with little success.  Since my husband’s closet is somewhat color-coded, I try to follow that example but he probably wonders if I’m color blind!

Because I work on television, I have a lot of brightly-colored clothing.   Years of advice from wardrobe consultants have filled my closet with a lot of reds, blues and jewel tones. No, we do not have people at Fox Chicago who tell us what to wear.

I have far more tops than bottoms.  Before we switched to an HD set, we used to wear jeans pretty often.  Some people even wore shorts during the summer.  We can’t do that anymore since we have new camera positions in the studio allowing viewers to see more of what we’re wearing.

Clearly, I need to weed out things that are outdated and merely taking up space.  But what if they come back into fashion?  Yeah, I’ll be ready when those skinny models hit the runways in Paris in dusty jackets!

A Short Story

A tiny tie!

A tiny tie!

I did a double take when I saw what Patrick Elwood was wearing today.  His 9-year-old son Marty had picked out his tie.  Not one of Pat’s ties.  His tie.  At least it wasn’t a clip-on!  No one could tell it was a child’s tie on television because he had his jacket buttoned for the newscast. Patrick is never short on love for his children.

An Earring Problem

Eek, where'd my earring go?

Eek, where'd my earring go?

Somewhere between the Northwest suburbs and downtown Chicago this morning, I lost one of my earrings.  I didn’t notice until just before the News at Noon.  For some reason, I had just one spare pair in my locker and they were too bohemian for the argyle sweater I wore today.

I just went without.  But my Fox Chicago colleagues were happy to weigh-in on my dilemma:

Purple Power

He thinks of everything!

He thinks of everything!

My wardrobe didn’t clash with David Novarro‘s this morning on “Good Day Chicago” because he called me yesterday to ask what color I planned to wear.  I later texted “Purple, as in Purple Rain”.  What a great job he did in color coordination – lavender shirt, purplish tie, gray suit.  It may seem superficial and perhaps you may not even notice our efforts but the goal was to avoid clashing.   (For the record, we spend far more time working on the show than figuring out our wardrobe.)

Color coordination seems to make a difference.  I’ve worn the same purple top numerous times before but today it drew new attention.  I received a lot of viewer comments including “Love the purple!” and “LOOOOVE your purple top today”.   Similar efforts are made by many anchor teams all over the country.  I once heard about a team that would actually plan out what colors they’d wear for the entire week!

"Hey, I didn't get the purple memo!"

Kori Chambers: "Hey, I didn't get the purple memo!"

We’re not that organized.  Many of us keep extra clothing in our lockers to remedy any outrageous color combos. Although my locker currently contains just 2 tops, a parka, tennis shoes and an emergency stash of sour gummy worms.  Those are colorful and I think they match all of my outfits.
