Resolution Solution

No longer on the grocery list.

No longer on the grocery list.

It’s been about a year since I gave up Diet Coke.  I used to drink about three a day.  I would never make a grocery run without buying at least a case of Diet Coke.  Zero calories and a caffeine kick! What harm could it be in a somewhat-balanced diet, right?  And it’s a far cheaper habit that smoking or drinking!

It wasn’t a formal New Year’s resolution.  I don’t make them anymore – perhaps so I won’t fail in keeping them.  But I’ve actually succeeded in giving up Diet Coke.   Last year, a nutritionist convinced me to take a close look at the ingredients.  Then Dr. Oz talked me into staying on course – though he said a Diet Coke here and there wouldn’t hurt.  No matter.  I’ve quit altogether and now I usually just drink water.

There are quite a few people in the news biz who are fueled by Diet Coke.  Some are Pepsi fans but Coke seems to be more popular in the newsroom.  There are often cans behind the anchor set and at workstations throughout the studio.

It doesn’t help that my co-anchor Patrick Elwood drinks a lot of Diet Coke.  A big part of the equation – pop is just 35¢ in the Fox Chicago break room and a bottle of water costs twice as much.  What’s up with that? I need to make a concerted effort to keep a bottle of water on hand at all times.  But I won’t make that a resolution.

Yay!! You are healthier for doing so! Kudos to you…but agree, one now and then won’t hurt.

I was a diet coke fanatic at one time too…at least a can a day. But quit it when I started my health journey. Have to admit…now and then I do crave it with pizza..but not enough to drink it again. There are so many wonderful options now. :)

Nancy congrats! When I was at Fox News Chicago I used to drink way too much Diet Coke too and it made my skin break out and made me hungry. It is addictive! You are either on that stuff or off. Any way as your looking at New You Resolutions thought you would enjoy these tips from Chicago based strategic thinking expert Rich Horwath http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IX_VScvSNY

    Good job!! Keep it up!
I also drink soda a lot, and my mom always yells at me when I go into the storage room where all the sodas are kept.
I’ve believed diet soda was safe to drink, but I don’t think so anymore according to all the studies and researches.

I admire what you’ve done so far!
I want to quit drinking soda, but at least, I will drink ‘less’ in the next year, and hopefully say ‘good-bye’ to it forever.

    Good posting!

Hi Nancy, Congrats on kicking the Coke habit!! I too used to drink quite a bit of it and stopped a few yrs. ago. I drink tea now instead. Much healthier and a vast selection out there. Also you DO have ¢ symbol on your keyboard. Just hold down your ALT key and press 155 (then release) from your #’s keypad. To find more symbols that may be useful to you, especially in your business, Google “alt key symbols.” ☺ ☺ ☺

Actually, I believe you should remove the decimal point from 35 cents. Otherwise you’re saying that a can of diet coke costs roughly 1/3rd of a penny. And if that’s the case, please share with all of us where you grocery shop. :)

Thanks, John! It’s fixed and it didn’t cost a ¢.

I haven’t been able to think about Coca Cola quite the same way since I heard that on one of those cleaning shows… the ones where they go into houses that are so horrible that they haven’t been cleaned in years… and they pour Coke in the toilets to dissolve the years of grime! Hmm… a little food (or beverage) for thought.

Great going on quitting DC. Why are you paying anything for water? Get yourself a decent reusable water bottle and fill it w/ the tap. Our Chicago water is just fine. I can’t believe a newsroom doesn’t have a water cooler anyway!
